A Palamedes PR poll for the audiobook publisher, AudioGO, has revealed that almost a fifth of teenagers think boxer Henry Cooper designed the Mini while others think racing legend Stirling Moss is supermodel Kate’s father.
A nationwide survey of youngsters aged between 16 and 18 also found confusion about the career path of footballer Sir Stanley Matthews. Nearly a tenth of youngsters believed that Matthews, who won 54 caps for England is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, was either the turkey-farming magnate, Bernard, or a relation.
Few young people knew three-times Wimbledon champion Fred Perry, had a tennis career before he became better known for his fashion lines, or that Sue Barker was a successful player before she became presenter of A Question of Sport.
The poll – which is running live on the Bath Chronicle website – was conducted by Palamedes PR on behalf of the UK’s audiobook publisher AudioGO to mark the release of the Fred Perry: In His Own Words audiobook, out this week.
It questioned 479 teenagers about their knowledge of previous British sporting legends in the run-up to Wimbledon.
A spokesman for Palamedes PR said: “We’re grateful to the Bath Chronicle for its support.”
