National newspaper coverage for prison reform campaigner

Author and prison reform campaigner Ben Pickering has been featured in national newspaper Metro.

The title, which is the UK’s highest-circulation newspaper, has covered calls by Pickering to make prisoners sit GCSEs before being eligible for early release.

Pickering, who served three years of a six-year sentence for mortgage fraud, says that his proposal strike a healthy balance between long-term rehabilitation and retribution by ending “soft justice” and the “culture of idleness” in prisons.

He believes that his plan, which has been submitted to the Secretary of State for Justice and Prime Minister, will cut reoffending rates by providing offenders with realistic job prospects on release.

While serving time, Pickering wrote his first novel, Freiheit, which won the Koestler Platinum Award for longer fiction. It is on sale now through Amazon.
