Children from various schools across the county won a competition to run the council for the day.
The finale of the ‘Run MCC for a Day’ contest took place last week when the winners of the inaugural competition took the reins of Monmouthshire County Council.
Eight youngsters from across the county won a place as the authority’s ‘acting Chief Executive’ in what is believed to have been the first contest of its kind in Britain.
They worked alongside councillors, cabinet members and chief officers at the Council’s headquarters in Us where they observed local politics “up close and personal”.
More than 100 entrants took part, but the four-strong panel of judges – Ann Widdecombe, Lucy Christopher, David Davies MP and Councillor Peter Fox – whittled down the “incredible strong” entries down to a final list of eight.
Paul Matthews, the council’s Chief Executive, is now considering making the contest – which attracted significant media coverage, including the latest publicity, below and here – an annual event.
