Where is the justice in UK prisons?

Film director, author and prison reform campaigner Ben Pickering has written exclusively for The European about the failings of the British penal system.

Pickering, who served three years of a six-year sentence for mortgage fraud, says in the article that the prison system as it stands is “broken”, with prisons being little more than “warehouses of souls”.

He argues that there has to be a fairer balance between retribution and rehabilitation if the UK hopes to reduce the high number of re-offenders.
