Woodbine Willie spent almost his entire salary on cigarettes for sick and dying soldiers

There has been further media exposure for historian and author Linda Parker, it was revealed today.

Dr Parker’s new research into the life of World War One army chaplain, Reverend Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy, nicknamed “Woodbine Willie”, has been featured on MSN UK.

The author and historian, whose acclaimed biography of Studdert Kennedy, A Seeker After Truths, is out now, has also been interviewed by BBC Radio Nottingham and BBC Radio Ulster about her findings that Woodbine Willie was so generous that he gave away close to one million cigarettes to sick or wounded troops.

She calculates that he spent a whopping total of £43,000 in today’s money on cigarettes during the Great War.
